Gary Vaynerchuk is a true force in Web 2.0 marketing leveraging the power of social media. I have previously posted videos of Gary on my blog and I have personally interviewed him for my Internet Business Blueprint podcast and closely follow his business model and marketing principles. I came across this video today and wanted to share it with you.

Here are a few basic principles on how to use social media effectively:

1. Content is King!

2. Just do it … don’t wait for someone to tell you “how to use social media – be authentic.

3. Invite others to the conversation and don’t just focus on yourself.

4. Recognize that your customers and followers control the message, so care about your followers and listen.

5. Live in the communities that care about what you love and talk about it – everyday!

In this CNN video Gary Vaynerchuk drives these points home in his usual entertaining way with clear and actionable advice. Gary also share a little insight into one of his greatest personal objectives, which just might surprise you or maybe not.

perrybelcher Responce to Perry Belcher Unplugged Could Be Late July Fireworks!

Perry Belcher

We have a very interesting guest joining us on Monday July 20, 2009 and there could be Late July Fireworks! I began promoting that Social Media Expert and Internet Marketing Guru Perry Belcher would be my special guest for a special one hour edition of the “Internet Business Blueprint” podcast, which I host every weekday. Perry Belcher witll be my guest Monday July 20th at 11:00 AM EST.

The responses I have received on Twitter have been more than interesting and will no doubt add a new twist to Perry appearance on the program.

My intention for inviting Perry on the program was to share my positive experience with others and allow my listeners to call in to ask Perry questions, chat with feedback, and benefit from the knowledge of someone who has produced tremendous results with consistency. There are literally ten of thousands of people trying to figure out how to make social media work, how to leverage it to build their brand and drive sales in their businesses. I felt that having Perry on the show would provide a unique opportunity to benefit a large number of entrepreneurs.

I have learned several profitable Internet strategies related to Google and other online marketing strategies from both Perry Belcher and his business partner Ryan Deiss through two programs: “Get Money From Google” and “Make Money with Your Microphone.” In both cases I found the content to be well researched, very actionable, and valuable when it comes to producing results.

Here is where the story becomes interesting. I have received a few tweets questioning why I would have a convicted felon on my show, someone who was convicted for running a fraudulent Internet marketing campaign and who had over one million dollars in assets seized by the Federal Government. They asked didn’t I know this about Perry Belcher? Fair question and I feel very comfortable with my answer. I did in fact know about Perry Belcher, the Federal Case for which he made restitution and all the details – Perry Belcher told me all about it and even told me where I could go to read all the details for myself. Ironically one of the sites is owned by a person who sent me a tweet.

I RESPECT all of the varied opinions on Perry Belcher, his crimes, his popularity, his authority on social media sites, his successes, and his failures. I can easily agree to disagree with the few who want to prosecute Perry Belcher over and over, I just as easily agree with the hundreds of thousands of people that follow Perry for his authenticity and sage marketing advice. So now you know my bias.I just posted a public comment on Perry’s blog in response to “Perry Belcher Shocking Confession Video” that Perry has posted and tweets out regular.

The comments I posted on Perry’s blog makes clear how I feel about this entire issue. I encourage you to watch it and draw your own conclusions, you can see it here: Perry Belcher’s Succcess Blog

Here is what I said:

“Perry -

I am going to “get real” with you here in response to your “getting real” through this video. I have seen your video a couple of times previously when you linked it to a Twitter post. I have and will continue to Re-Tweet this every time I see it for one simple reason.

My faith is Christian and I love the principles of forgiveness and redemption that are a cornerstone of my faith. Being fallible humans we can all fall short of perfection time and time again – at times some may go beyond making poor choices to consciously commit crimes, or harm another, etc. Does that matter? Absolutely it does!

But here is the reality; the story is not complete until the final chapter is written and only then can the character of a man be judged as final. It sounds like you did indeed cross the line and no doubt you paid a very heavy price and I am sure spend a good deal of your time making apologies for what has been exposed. That being said, you have admitted what has been done, paid your debt to society, and fulfilled your obligations under the law. Both the law and hundreds of thousands of people (friends, piers, associates, clients, customers, members of your list, and social media followers) have indeed proclaimed “your debt is paid in full and you are forgiven.”

Now comes your redemption. I can only judge by my personal experience, anything more is either opinion or an ill advised use stories from others, proof that is neither validated or my own. That type of judgment would lack integrity. I have followed you for the last several months, I have purchased yours and Ryan’s products and listed to hours and hours of your trainings, I have trusted you and with my credit card as a member of your continuity program, and I have benefited greatly from the value I have received.

So being a person of faith, I choose not to judge beyond what I personally know and the law has required. I have witnessed your passion and desire to teach others how to succeed in business, and I believe you have provided a great service to the social media community through your work – teaching others how to be well behaved at the party helps all of us.

Keep changing lives by the power gained through redemptive acts and the anonymous voices will over time fade away, driven into the darkness by the light of truth!

I appreciate you and the work that you and Ryan are producing. Keep adding value, keeping it up front and honest and many will benefit as a result.

Have a blessed day!

James”

In addition to discussing Perry’s life, his Internet marketing strategies, and his rise through social media, we will be discussing his new project with Ryan Deiss called “The Social Media Matrix,” which is being launched this week. If you are interested in the program that I referenced click here for “Get Money From Google” this is a tremendous value at $27.00, which includes five bonus courses.

I personally invite you to log on to the podcast, it should be interesting and I promise you will learn several actionable strategies that will allow you to grow your business, which is after all one of the primary purposes for the podcast. The interview will be live and we will take your questions at: The Internet Business Blueprint

Gary Vaynerchuk Live and Unplugged!

Gary Vaynerchuck Social Media: Twitter Power Is In The Moment

It was a typical Sunday morning, I like to settle in with a hot cup of coffee and the Sunday newspapers and a passive monitoring of Twitter from my hand held device; suddenly everything changed in a moment of opportunity which is great for you and me. Social media guru and owner of The Wine Library Gary Vaynerchuk was stuck in an airport, no lap top with six hours to kill.

Gary sent out this simple tweet; “laptop broke (no audio can’t tape a vid) no flip left it in NJ, so cant tape, so no taping icon sad Social Media: Twitter Power Is In The Moment I guess I can do some interviews, any1 want me?”

I saw the power in that moment and sent Gary an immediate reply asking if he would be up for an impromptu interview and Q&A session on my podcast channel. Gary said; “let’s do it!” Thirty minutes later we were on the air with dozens of people tweeting about the call and joining the conversation with great questions for Gary, who provided tremendous value for everyone listening. There is a lesson here for anyone interested in leveraging social media to deliver a message or to reach a large group of people in a short period of time.

As you invest time in social media look for opportunities to engage at a deeper level and take action when an opportunity reveals itself.  Among the many golden nuggets shared on the podcast two come to mind and I want to share these principles with you.

1. Patience is a lost art and needed in social media: Get engaged and be consistent, the result will follow given enough time and activity.

2. Social Media = Business in 2009

Who is GaryVaynerchuk?

Gary Vaynerchuk has captured attention with his pioneering, multi-faceted approach to personal branding and business. After primarily utilizing traditional advertising techniques to build his family’s local wine business into a national industry leader, Gary rapidly leveraged social media tools such as Twitter and Facebook to promote Wine Library TV, his video blog about wine. As his viewership swelled to over 80,000 a day, doors opened to a book deal, several national TV appearances, and a flurry of speaking engagements around the world. Gary’s dual identity as both business guru and wine guy has made him the “Social Media Sommelier.”

Social Media 101: A Fast Start Guide

Social media is emerging as an essential component of the online business funnel for the purpose of growing your network and building quality back links to your blogs and web pages. There are many who are just starting to become familiar with social media and this post will serve as a fast start guide to help get you started and for seasoned participant online I will share a few best practices that I feel are critical for success.

There are thousands of social media websites online that generally fall into two basic categories; it is important that you understand each one and how to utilize them to build your business. I will define what these are with a few examples of each type and share a few tactics to enable you to make the most of your time  investment in social media.

I. Two Primary Categories of Social Media Sites

1. Networking Sites: Networking Sites are designed to build networks of individuals “friends” and to connect with large groups of people with common interest. This catagory include Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. The characteristics of these sites provide you with the ability to create a rich highly personal profile, to search for and add associates or friends to your profile, allows you to search for and join groups and encourages interaction through direct messages and comments on the profiles of your friends.

2. Link Building Sites: Link Building Sites are designed to build links back to your websites and blogs allowing you to create single page mini-sites on a specific topic. The entries are informational or editorial in nature as opposed to promotional; the opportunity is to demonstrate your authority or share your experiences on a topic and provide one or two links back to your site for reference. Sites like Squidoo and HUB Pages are among the most popular link building sites and are my favorite among link building sites available free to join on the Internet

It is essential to develop a social media strategy a “game plan” to ensure that your investment of time in social media is effective and allows you to efficiently attract a network, build your back-links and grow your business.

Here are the steps I recommend to successfully create your game plan:

1. Decide if you are going to work with Networking Sites, Link Building Sites, or both

2. Brand yourself FIRST, not your company

3. Find your voice

4. Be Consistent

5. Be honest acting with integrity

Let’s take a closer look at each of these steps to create a sound foundation to build your social media program.

1. Networking, Link Building or Both: I personally do both because this is where the leverage exist and every action you take can create multiple outcomes for your business. If you decide to build both, you will need to select three to five sites of both types meaning you will be managing six to ten sites per day which can be done with an hour of focused time by utilizing tools that I will share with you in a future post.

Once you have selected the sites that you are going to build you will need to create complete and consistent profiles for each site, search for groups and connect to friends on your networking sites. For link building sites you will need to create your profile and begin to add content be creating your mini-sites being careful to weave your links in with relevant content.

2. Brand Yourself First: One of the biggest mistakes I see network marketers, affiliate marketers, and direct sales professionals make is enthusiastically branding their company instead of themselves thereby giving control of their most valuable business asset to a third party whom they cannot control. If you are known in the marketplace as the “juice guy,” or the “travel lady,” or the “vitamin guy” instead of the “home-based business professional,” you are putting your business at risk.

How often do you read about a company falling under negative media scrutiny, suddenly closing it’s doors, or making operational changes causing a distributor or reseller to leave and begin with a new company. The problem is that a large part of their brand is no longer relevant so they need to reeducate their marketplace and in many cases contradict prior statements about their former company and their undying loyalty to that company. I could go on and on concerning this point because it is critical to get this right and avoid damaging your brand.

3. Find Your Voice: Carefully determine which parts of your personalty you are going to bring to your brand to make yourself standout from the online crowd. There is a great marketer named Perry Belcher who has a very strong image as a “really great dude!” He wears crazy shirts, talks in a down-home no non-sense fashion and people easy relate to his rebel style – this is his brand. On the other extreme is Eben Pagan, a brilliant marketer who presents a very businesslike clean cut suit and tie image; Eben speaks like a Harvard MBA and relates very well with like minded people who value what he represents. There is no right or wrong; when Perry wears a shirt covered in flames, I am sure he loves his shirt, when Eben slips into an Armani suit, I am sure he loves his suit. We all have diverse personalities, just decide what aspect of your personality you want to amplify.

4. Be consistent: Remember that every picture you post and word you write leaves a footprint on the internet. Mistakenly many people believe if they delete something online that it is gone for ever, this is not the case at all. For this reason make sure that you have consistency and continuity in the all of your postings, comments, recommendations, photographs and videos placed online as you build your brand. Make it your practice to ask the questions “how does this reflect on my brand” before adding content to the internet.

5. Be Honest and Act with Integrity: From time to time a few marketers in social media communities tend to exaggerate their track record or results for fear of not attracting prospects. If you are new or do not have results simply leverage the story and results of your up line and mentors. People will respect your honesty and will likely relate to you more than if they believe you make a million dollars a year. Remember this simple concept there are two simple statements that you can make with integrity; 1. This is what I have done, do this and 2. This is what I am doing, do this. Anything else is outside of your integrity including NOT sharing what is working with your team members.

In closing, I want to give you a few pointers to help you grow your social media following and to keep you from becoming a social media outcast on networking sites.

1. Start adding people you know as friends in your network; relatives, co-workers, friends and family.

2. Utilize the search function within each community to locate people you know, people in your profession, people who share common interest. Send them a friendship connection request and whatever you do, don’t solicit them until you have built rapport.

3. Utilize the search “Groups” function within each community to locate large groups of people who share a common interest and join them.

4. Be active and conversational in each community. Freely share ideas, complement others and engage in conversations using the message and chat features.

5. Be interested and others will find you interesting.

By implementing these practices you will build a large vibrant social identity and a community that grows organically. When the time is right you will know how best to approach individuals who are qualified to view your opportunity. You might also be surprised by how many ask you to show them what you do.

The Obama campaign was fascinating to watch; their use of social media and measurable results will be studied by universities and campaign strategist for years to come. I hear a few voices speaking up in denial of the power of social media; I think it will only be a matter of time before the evidence becomes overwhelming and we fully understand who has been left behind.

The key to making social media work is tracking results and being aware of the movement in the marketplace as the cheese is constantly being repositioned among new and evolving platforms. A few years ago it was MySpace, last year FaceBook surged ahead and in 2009 it will likely be Twitter. The good news is that with an appropriate social media strategy a business or cause can benefit tremendously and the good news is that most of the available resources are free to access.

Edelman Research recently published a report sub-titled “The Obama Social Media Tool Kit” that should be read by everyone interested in social media and marketing through social media.

To Download a copy of the report: CLICK HERE

I recommend that you read this 11 page report, create your social media strategy and implement it immediately also be sure to track and measure your results. If you are new to social media please recognize that it takes a little time to develop scale and quality in your relationships; however, if you are patient and consistent your results may astound you.
