Last night Matthew McConaughey was awarded the Oscar for Best Actor by the Academy of Arts and Sciences for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club then proceeded as all winners do… he gave an acceptance speech. I felt in the moment and continue to believe McConaughey’s speech was remarkable for one primary reason, the speech offered valuable life lessons for anyone with an open mind.
I would like to share McConaughey’s comments with you here in case you missed him. Once you have watched the video you will be able to draw your own conclusions about his message and if the lessons shared have meaning for you. I have also provided a few thoughts of my own for your consideration.
Matthew McConaughey’s Complete Acceptance Speech
Lessons from Matthew McConaughey Acceptance Speech
I do agree with McConaughey’s expressions made in his speech from the moment he thanked God until the point he walked off stage. I believe his speech showed humility, self-determination, and a mindset consistent with someone who lives consciously and accepts responsibility for owning their results in life.
I appreciate the expression of gratitude and I think this is one of the most undervalued emotions we possess. I note that the most successful people I know are also the most grateful, and those who struggle most often fail to express gratitude for what they have and actually focus their energy on what they lack. The lesson is clear, you must embrace the life you have with gratitude even as you strive to make it better.
“Its a scientific fact that gratitude reciprocates.” – Matthew McConaughey
One of the essential components of creating a life by design is valuing and respecting yourself and this was not always supported by our authority figures growing up. People are often made to believe that conformity will lead to a happy life and that stepping outside of the box or believing in the idea of limitless possibilities is futile. It is not possible to deny the core essence of who you are without disrespecting yourself at the same time. Therefore if you determine to live your life governed by self-respect you will do so both authentically and within your integrity.
Make a Hero of Your Potential Future Self
I think the concept of ‘chasing your future self’ is honorable because it sets into motion the probability that you will more fully live up to your potential. The thought that you could achieve a life worthy of hero status demonstrates a conscious view of the world and your place in it. This manner of thinking also honors the God given gifts you possess as a person made in the image of God.
I am not surprised to read a few cynical voices seeking to label Matthew McConaughey’s comments as a sign of arrogance or his reference to God to be self-serving… I would expect that view from cynics. Don’t allow your point of view to become compromised by shallow thoughts, rather choose to look for the deeper meaning and determine how the lessons learned can enable you to improve your results in life.
Have a blessed day!
