List building is a crucial piece of the success puzzle when it comes to creating a successful Internet marketing business. The bottom line is clear, you need a list regardless of which business model you choose; information product marketing, affiliate marketing, direct sales or any other the other handful of variant models you have to choose from. The bottom line is to be successful you must place your message in front of your market with consistently.

There are a variety of channels that you can use to deliver your message, but few are more effective than a responsive double opt in subscriber list of buyers who already know you, like you and most importantly have grown to trust you. Once you have a subscriber list in place, you should plan to earn one dollar for every name on your list each month. Then if your desire is to make more money simply grow a bigger list.

I have been and will continue to focus on list building for the rest of my entrepreneurial career, both in my personal business and in the training, resources and tools I produce.

When used correctly pop-ups are a very effective way to get sign-ups for your mailing list from visitors to your site. A pop-up is a script that allows you to post a form or ad on your website or blog. When a new visitor arrives at your site the web-form or ad pops-up in front of a portion of the screen, this can alternatively be done when the visitor exits your site. I have found that the exist pop-up are less intrusive and better received by most visitors.

The beauty really is in the eye of the beholder when it comes to pop-ups and some view them positively while others find them to me a little annoying. Personally, I do not mind them as long as the information provided adds value. I also prefer to see them on exit – after I have viewed the information that I came to the site to see in the first place.

As with everything I teach, strive first to add value to the end user in this case the visitor to your site. Make an offer that in compelling, such as a unique digital product, subscription to a valuable newsletter, or a personal consultation. If you are trying to promote a specific product or business opportunity, offer something of value free that is relevant to the opportunity that you will eventually be presenting.

Remember that the primary objective of the pop-up should be listing building, not necessarily selling. Your readers will appreciate the value you give, you will then have an opportunity to develop a relationship with your subscriber and convert from prospect to customer or associate.

These scripts are considered to be stealth or viral methods of marketing and they are very effective. There is one challenge that can make it a little tricky to reach all of your visitors due to “pop-up blocker” that are a preference setting in most web browsers such as Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome and others. There is little you can do about that, however, more advanced marketers can use “DHTML coded pop-ups” which cannot be blocked. I wouldn’t recommend this as it is a forced action against the wishes of your visitors.

There is a problem with traditional pop-ups you should be aware of as many people these days have pop-up blockers on their PCs. These are free and easily installed, so you have to make a little effort if you want to get around pop-up blockers, but it’s worth it for the boost to your list building.

Adding pop-ups to your sites is a very easy process and the task can be completed a variety of ways, you can use your autoresponder’s pre-loaded form maker to obtain the form code, you can use a web-based hosting service, or you can use the next generation po-up known as the Magic List Builder.

The Magic List Builder is unique in the marketplace as it allows you to place a pop-up on ANY website you chose. Here is an example of a few sites that I placed my personal opt-in form on. These are BIG, highly trafficed sites.

I placed my personal opt-in offer using the Magic List Builder with just the click of a few buttons. What makes this particular tool so unique is your ability to place your pop-up on any site and do so without being blocked. From a marketing perspective you can place your pop-up on every site that you post on a social network or tweet. That is powerful!

Here is a check list for effectively using pop-ups on your sites:

  • Offer an item of extreme value such as a free e-book or special report in exchange for their email addresses.
  • Be sure that your pop-up has a clearly marked close option. Do not offend your visitors by forcing them to sign up to your mailing list in order to close the pop-up.
  • Leverage your keywords in your pop-up headline.
  • You will want your pop-up to load right away (or you can program it deliberately to fade in), so use limited or few graphics.
  • If you use these techniques, your pop-ups should be catchy and compelling and that should ensure that they help your list building efforts.

When done correctly, pop-ups can add a great deal of impact to your list building efforts. By following my advice here, you will be able to add tremendous value to your visitors and grow your subscriber list.

Social Bookmarking is a powerful method for driving traffic to your blog and sales pages to create opt ins and build your list. This really IS NOT rocket science, but there are a few tips to share as well as a few quality sites to recommend and get you started.

So what is social bookmarking? Social Bookmarking is the act of recommending or reviewing blog post, articles, videos, podcast and other content by “marking” the chosen entries on one or more book marketing websites like those recommended in this post. Typically you will sign-up for a free account at one or more sites and recommend content as you surf he Internet or stumble across content you deem to be worthy of comment.

Social bookmarking is also a powerful SEO tool and you should always bookmark your own content or encourage others to do so on your behalf. Be sure that your bookmarking efforts are universal and that you are not limiting your activity to marking your own sites. Be sure to actively bookmark the sites of others and find a balance in the proportion of sites you mark.

Here are a few basic tips to help you maximize your list building activities using Social Bookmarking sites:

  • Use your blog as the hub for all of your content, traffic and social networking activities – everything should flow from and return to your blog!
  • By using the Internet you are marketing to a expanding global marketplace. As a result you will want to post in English and if you have skills in other languages have a little fun and experiment a little. There also are a number of free plug-ins that will allow you to add a translation feature to your site.
  • Always be mindful of SEO best practices and use keyword driven anchor text when adding a link to your blog post.
  • Utilize audio and video to make your blog post more engaging – this will also make you site very sticky!
  • Make it easy for your readers to bookmark your blog post by providing Social Media and Bookmarking icons prominently on your site and at the bottom of every page and post.
  • Create a compelling opt in in exchange for your visitors name and email address and add them to your list.

How does Leadgusher work?

Leadgusher is a listbuilding website that aggregates RSS Feeds based on the specific keywords or keyword phrases that you enter into the setup profile. In effect you create a keyword specific link directory to post in your niche, which in turn delivers organic results for your webpage to your target audience. But that is only half of story!

In addition to creating your feed directory the site also promote your primary business opportunity or recommended resource above the fold on your website. Systems like Leadgusher are designed to help you list build and create a secondary income stream while promoting your primary business. Would you love to be standing in front of a huge crowd of loyal subscribers waiting patiently to engage in the community you are creating through your blog? The process is actually quite simple as long as you seek first to add value and deliver on your specific promises. I have put together five surefire strategies to ensure you become a crowd souring expert by following my actionable advice.

List Building Strategies #1. Make Your Content Relevant

One of the biggest mistakes I see newsletter and e-zine publishers making is writing about non-congruent topics that their readers may not be interested in. Sourcing a crowd of loyal readers requires a certain sensitivity to why your readers chose to subscribe in the first place – what was your promise?

I recommend surveying your readers from time to time and rewarding them for taking the time to respond with a high value e-book, audio file or video. Provide a few topics that you are thinking about publishing on and ask them for suggestions of the topics they are hoping to learn more about by being a subscriber to your list. This will provide a sense of ownership among your readers and you will inspire a sense of community among your subscribers.

List Building Strategy #2: Add A Subscriber Opt In Box To Your Blog

I know, this sounds like a fundamental step and you are correct – it is! It is surprising how many people actually fail to do this and many who do provide an subscriber opt in web-form do it incorrectly. Let’s fix that!

My recommendation is to offer the opt in in three specific ways:

1. Create a web-form using your auto-responder service so that your subscribers are actually opting into your primary list – not just registering to your blog list. The major auto-responder services like Aweber and Traffic Wave offer simple plug and play form creators and tutorials on how to do this in a few simple steps.

Once your web-form has been created it can be integrated anywhere on the site that adds to the overall functionality of your site design and navigation which usually would be on your side bar near the top of every page.

2. Offer RSS (known as “Really Simple Syndication” or “Rich Site Summary”) allows visitors to subscribe to a subscription to receive a summary view of your site containing your articles each time you post. The visitor opts into a subscription and can choose to either receive notification by email or gain access using a RSS reader. Here is an example of the RSS for my site AskJamesHolmes RSS

Most blog themes automatically integrate RSS into the design on their templates. However, there is an option to use a free third party service such as Feed Burner – my personal choice. You may also want to add an RSS plug in that will allow you to post a subscription form at the bottom of your pages or post.

3. E-Mail Opt In is an option but not one I would recommend as your primary method. The process is simple and involves subscribing your readers to your auto-responder by having your reader send a “blank e-mail” to a specific e-mail address within your auto-responder. By taking the action of sending the blank e-mail your reader is subscribed to that specific list.

List Building Strategy #3: Offer An Outstanding Bonus Or Gift

I always assume that I must provide exceptional value to my subscribers before I can expect to gain their loyalty to my list and I strive to deliver value through quality content, bonus offers and gifts.

It is critical that your gifts be given with the right intention, you are not trying to build a list of “freebie seekers,” so view these gestures as loyalty rewards – not as bait to gain their opt in. Now this is quite different from an ethical bribe, which is the gift you are giving in exchange for their initial subscription.

List Building Strategy #4: Use Free Viral E-Books To Gain New Subscribers

Viral marketing is powerful and using viral e-books will allow you to attract thousands of subscribers to your list by giving your books away. You can create the e-books yourself, heavily edit private label rights products, or claim a free subscription at Viral E-Book Explosion – this site will work for you.

So what makes theses e-books viral? The answer is comes down to the quality of the content and the number of relevant links embedded into the book. Be sure to provide recommendations for products and services that relate to the content contained in the text and place links to your websites, blogs, newsletters and affiliate programs.

When preparing your e-books for distribution, keep your primary goal in mind – you are using these tools to build your list not to make a sale. Be sure to promote your e-books to other marketers who can help you launch your book virally.

List Building Strategy #5: Use Pop Up Windows at EXIT

I have seen many bloggers use pop up opt in boxes with great effect over the last few years. I do recommend this method but I would only recommend using these scripts at exist. I am annoyed when I arrive at a website or blog and I am immediately greeted by a pop up subscriber form before I have even had a chance to derive value from the site.

Remember what I said at the beginning of this post – “I always assume that I must provide exceptional value to my subscribers before I can expect to gain their loyalty to my list…”

Deliver your pop-up after you have delivered value and make sure that your opt in offer, your “ethical bribe” is congruent with the content of your site. As I write this post, I am using “List Hero” on my blog – although that may change from time to time as I split test and revise my messages.

The exit pop up is an excellent way to deliver additional value to every visitor to your site and the process of setting a pop up on your blog is very simple.

I recommend the following:

1. List Hero – This is a turnkey solution, a complete system  for building your list.

2. AWeber – Build instant pop up forms with custom features.

3. Now Sell Script – This is more advanced if you need a techy solution.

So there you have it, a completely actionable set of strategies to engage your crowd of readers and build you list. Keep in mind that your purpose is to add value and build a community of subscribers that will grow with every visit to your websites and blogs. Chose one method and work with it through to completion, then add an second strategy and do the same. Over time implement all five and you l be well on your way to growth in your online business.

If you are an Internet Marketer your must have an auto-responder or responsible for marketing an offline business you should be using one. Auto-responders are the key automating your communications flow with your prospects and clients.

I am posting a series of articles to share key information on how you can use auto-responders to boost your sales. Auto-responders are automated “sales aides” that tirelessly follow up with your prospects and customers so you can form relationships.

You simply create a series of letters and decide how often you want them to be sent. Then, when people sign up for your auto-responder series, each follow-up letter is sent on the precise schedule that you’ve established. Can you see how powerful this is for growing your business?

How can you leverage auto-responders? You can accomplish anything that you can do with e-mail, but do it once and allow the system to personalize and send out your messages on auto-pilot.

Here’s some of the best ways to leverage auto-responders to grow your business:

  • Deliver FREE Reports (You can provide true value)
  • Provide Technical Support Follow-up (Solve problems for people)
  • Deliver Online Sales and Training Courses (Provide wealth building tools)
  • Deliver Frequently Asked Questions (Anticipate stumbling blocks)
  • Process Online Forms (Create efficiency)

There are essentially three types of auto responders available. Each one has its own features, benefits and short comings. Keep in mind that it’s up to you to determine which type of account meets your needs.

Here’s a look at your options:

PC-Based Auto-Responders

This is a software package that you install right on your computer. It parses and processes incoming mail through your existing e-mail client and responds to messages that meet your criteria.

I have personally never used this type of system as e-mail deliverability is crucial and it is a bit of a risk not using a web-based service that keeps up on all of the changes within the ISP community. The three web-based services I recommend have full-time staffs that work on this issue on your behalf.

Advantages

  • You typically pay a one-time fee and you own the software.
  • It’s easy to use but typically provides only the most basic auto-responder services.

Disadvantages

  • It only works when your computer is on and connected to the Internet.
  • It’s only as fast as your Internet connection
  • Your ISP may not allow you to send large quantities of mail.
  • You could get shut down if a subscriber forgets that they asked for your auto-responder series and makes a S~P~A~M complaint

Owner-Managed, Web-Based Auto-Responders

This is software that you install directly on your own web site. While some of the packages are full-featured, many are weak and buggy.

Advantages

  • You typically pay a one-time fee and you own it.
  • Some versions have advanced features.
  • It’s as fast as your server’s Internet connection.

Disadvantages

  • You need advanced technical knowledge to install and maintain the auto-responder.
  • You have to own your own web site and domain name.
  • You may exceed your web host’s daily bandwidth limits if your auto-responder series is popular.
  • You could get shut down if a subscriber forgets that they asked for your auto-responder series and makes a S~P~A~M complaint

Auto-Responder Service Provider (My Recommendation)

This is an auto-responder service that you pay a small monthly fee (typically less that $20) and operate from a web based administration panel that is password protected.

The service provided host list database as well your entire follow email series, newsletter, etc.

Advantages

  • You don’t need any technical knowledge.
  • You don’t need to own your own web site or domain name.
  • You don’t have to worry about e-mail or bandwidth limits.

Most auto-responder operators realize that auto-responder S~P~A~M complaints are usually bogus, so they are more lenient when you get one.

Disadvantages

You have to pay a monthly fee but, in most cases, it’s more than worth it to not have to deal with all the hassles of running your own. I DON NOT really consider this a “disadvantage” as I view this as a small investment in your business with BIG returns!

Deciding what type of auto-responder you want is just the first step. No auto-responder is a good deal if you don’t understand the secrets of using them to help grow your list and build your business. We will cover the secrets behind successfully utilizing auto-responders in my next post.
